BIODATA OF KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
PROF. DR. MALIK BADRI
Professor Malik Badri was born in Rufa’a, Sudan in 1932. He obtained his B.A. (with distinction) and his Diploma of Education from the American University of Beirut, in 1956. His M.A. was also secured from the same university in 1958. He further obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Leicester, England in 1961 and his Postgraduate Certificate of Clinical Psychology from the Academic Department of Psychiatry of the Middlesex Hospital Medical School of London University in 1966.

He was elected Fellow of the British Psychological Society in 1977 and is now the holder of the title of C.Psychol. In recognition to his contributions in his field he was awarded an honorary D.Sc. from the Ahfad University and was decorated by the President of Sudan in April of the year, 2003, with the medal of Shahid Zubair, the highest award for academic excellence.

Apart from being appointed as professor and dean in varies universities, such as Dean of the Faculty of Education in the Universities of Khartoum and Juba and the Acting Dean of the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization of the International Islamic University, Malaysia, he was also the founder of a number of departments of psychology such as the one he established in Imam Mohammad bin Saud University in Riyadh and the Applied Psychology Department of the University of Khartoum. Professor Badri also served as senior clinical psychologist in a number of hospitals and clinics in the Middle East and Africa and was the founder of the Psychological Clinic of the University of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 1971. At present he is re-appointed Professor in the Department of Psychology of the International Islamic University of Malaysia.
DR. JED MAGEN. DO, MS
Dr. Jed Magen is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at Michigan State University. Dr. Jed Magen graduated from the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Des Moines, Iowa, and did a rotating internship at Botsford General Hospital in Farmington Hills, Michigan.
Dr. Magen was a commissioned officer in the United States Public Health Service serving with the Indian Health Service for three years. He did a general psychiatry residency and a child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at the University of Michigan, where he was chief resident in child and adolescent psychiatry and then departmental chief resident. He did a research fellowship at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan. He is board certified in general and child and adolescent psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the American Osteopathic Board of Neurology and Psychiatry.
He completed a Master of Science degree in Medical Management at the University of Texas, Dallas School of Management in 2003. He is an expert in the area of funding of graduate medical education in the United States. He is a part of a research group studying neuropsychiatric outcomes of cerebral malaria in children in Africa. His special interests are diagnosis and evaluation of children and adolescents with combined medical-psychiatric disorders and severe, complex psychiatric disorders.
DR. FARHA ABBASI, M.D
Dr. Farha Abbasi is an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Michigan State University and staff psychiatrist at the Olin Student Health Center. She migrated from Pakistan and settled in the United States in 2000. In January of 2009, Abbasi was awarded the American Psychiatric Association SAMSHA Minority Fellowship.
She used the grant to create awareness about cultural competency, to redefine it as not just tolerance for others, but rather acceptance. Her areas of interest are cultural psychiatry and teaching medical students how to provide culturally appropriate care to Muslim patients. She works with the Muslim American community to encourage integration rather than isolation from mainstream society.
Abbasi recently received the Pioneer Award from the Michigan All Pakistan Physicians of North America. In addition to her efforts to build bridges between cultures, Abbasi’s work as a psychiatrist has led her to publicly address the barriers that stigmatize and silence mental health issues within the Islamic community. She has established the Muslim Mental Health Conference and is the managing editor for Journal of Muslim Mental Health. She works relentlessly and tirelessly towards one goal: learning to coexist and go beyond our differences to reach the common point of peace and prosperity.
DR. HALIM NAEEM, PH.D.
Dr. Halim Naeem is president of Naeem and Associates and has been in psychology practice for seven years. He takes a multifaceted approach to treatment, which incorporates lifestyle changes such as diet, supplements, exercise, brain optimization, assessments and psychotherapy.
His training includes the areas of consultation, personality and intellectual assessment, counseling (individual, adolescent, group, couples and family therapy), psychopathological issues, research methods, supervision, psychological theory, and ethics.
His specialties are in the adolescent and African-American Muslim population with special interest in the effects of educational policy on the lifespan of minority and impoverished population.
